The Fitbit has been around for a very long time and has adapted well with the times. The people who would consider a Fitbit are those who may be beginners, fitness goers, or those who need a watch. I purchased my Fitbit because I wanted to use it for weight loss and fitness. I can use it to assess my sleep, activity level, and calories burned.

To give you a good idea of who is using this watch, I am moderately fit with a desk job and serving job. I have had my Fitbit for 5 months now, so I am finally able to give a good review! It’s important to note that I am no techie so it won’t be that critical but more of a basic review by your average person trying to convince (or not) you to get one for your health.

Overview

Good:

The Fitbit looks sleek, is very light, and comfortable to wear. The battery life lasts for days and gives you reminders of when it may die. It can track and read your heart rate, calories burned, steps, sleep, and has fitness apps included. It also will make you healthier because you will be more aware of what you are doing in the day.

Bad:

It can impact your mental health and overly analytical. If you work at a desk job and see that you have only had about 4,000 steps for the day, it can be discouraging and negative. The watch also stopped alerting me know about text messages. Another freaky thing that happened while I was wearing it, was it actually ended up burning me! Make sure you take breaks from wearing it, so it doesn’t overheat on you. The band is also tricky to change out.

Bottom Line:

This little guy is great for beginners who have no idea about calories, heart rates, and tracking steps! It’s amazing and I highly recommend it for the quality that it is. It also has amazing graphics to it, has a larger screen than most, and does the job you need it too by tracking steps and your overall health. Taking breaks from it will even better your health in the long run.

If this sounds great to you, get it on Amazon while its on sale for the holidays here!

Okay so this is a lot to take in but overall, this FITBIT MADE ME HEALTHIER! I know it seems crazy, but it really did and here’s how. It showed me the number of calories I would burn in a workout which made me ultimately want to work out harder and more just so I can feel accomplished. I am a Capricorn so checking off lists and completing goals is something I find pleasing.

This is really the best feature of the Fitbit because then you can watch what you eat! This is how I was able to asses properly the number of calories I need to eat in a day for weight loss or even weight gain.

Everyone’s calories are going to be different and ultimately based on your activity levels and BMR which Fitbit can figure out and assess for you to help you with meal planning and workout routines.

Another way it helped me stay in shape and get healthier was the reminders to get up and move so I can make it to 10,000 steps in a day. Which by the way, walking is incredible for weight loss.

Its attractive, light, and beginner-friendly

This was a week in November where my average burn was about 2,000 calories. I love that I’m able to see this! it puts things into perspective.

Another reason to consider purchasing a Fitbit is that its user-friendly af, attractive, and light. One of my favorite features is compatibility with other fitness apps like Fitness pal or Chronometer. This is great because it can track your weight loss over time when connected with a blue tooth scale or manual input.

With the monthly and weekly overviews it offers, it will tell you all the things you have accomplished. It’s a very positive app that makes you feel fantastic!

Another bonus? It’s AFFORDABLE. It’s so much cheaper than an Apple watch and literally offers similar features. Fitbit Versa (the one I have) is only about $120 at the time of this article and Apple watches range from $350-$1,000… r u kidding me…

If you are trying to live a healthier lifestyle, a Fitbit is the best way to go for your weight loss journey. Fitbit is one of the greatest tools besides a gym and healthy eating to accomplish your goals.

The Ugly Side of the Fitbit Versa…

Okay so now, the bad in detail about the Fitbit. Here’s a quick general overview:

  • Hard to change the band
  • Not the best watch faces
  • Can trigger negative behavior towards fitness
  • If worn too much can cause burns
  • Wi-Fi connection gets lost sometimes
  • Doesn’t consider all types of movement

Negative, obsessive, and burns?!

The Fitbit is an amazing piece of technology but does not come without its flaws. Also, I know the title is crazy, it’s not as bad as it sounds though! One of the biggest negatives I noticed with time was becoming obsessive/ addicted to the numbers, the calories, and the steps. Even though this is also positive on the Fitbit, it can also be negative! Try not to obsess over these and if you are, its time to take a break.

This is a snapshot of the app when I was using the calorie tracker. As you can see, it was totally not a bad day at all! in fact by the end of this day, I was in a calorie deficit still. But it still made it negative and made me feel sad when I went over target. it shows me the fat, carbs, and protein which I like. During this time I was trying out Keto.

I was using the food tracker on the app, and it was awful compared to a regular food tracker app. The reason why I didn’t like the app was that it can cause restrictive behavior based on how many calories you have already burned instead of the overall calories for the day. For example, if you eat breakfast right when you wake up and you have only burned 300 calories, you can only eat about 100 calories.

BUT WAIT. There’s a way you can combat this! I decided instead to just be conscious of how much I’m eating overall. Because of the monthly overview it has, I can see how many calories I am burning a day. With that number, I can calculate how many calories I should be eating in a day… For example, I burn about 2000 calories a day so a deficit (for weight loss) would be about 1500 calories compared to 1800 for maintenance. Of course, there are other micro and macros you need to consider but you can use a calculator for that to get the right amounts of everything, so you aren’t deficient.

honest review: burned from the fitbit
This was taken today… However, it looked way worse last week. I took a break…

Another thing I noticed that was scary but worth mentioning was that I got a burn from wearing the Fitbit! It’s crazy because I don’t know how it happened. I think I may have had it on to tightly and it may have overheated or something? Not sure, but if you may know, comment down below! It also causes natural wear on the area of the wrist because its always on. So, make sure to take breaks from your watch for your mental health and skin health!

The watch faces, bands, and apps

The band is incredibly hard to change out for a new one and some of the newer bands that you get may not be made well. If that’s the case, you can kiss it goodbye because it won’t fit into the watch properly. The app also only offers so many watch faces all of which are either slow, super colorful, or include TMI. I like the one that Fitbit comes with when you get it because it shows me what I need to see and its very minimalistwhich I personally enjoy.

There are tons of apps you can download on the watch however; it may be overwhelming and you definitely don’t need all of the apps. An interval timer and a workout app are great to add onto the watch as it will vibrate when its time to take a rest or keep going– this is great for ab workouts and HIIT workouts. However, I haven’t had much time to investigate the different apps, some cost money and you may not even need them because it comes with exactly what you need.

The bottom Line

Here is a screenshot of what your workouts would look like once you finish! I really like that it shows how long you have done it for, the number of calories and HR.

Honestly if you have debated getting one because of the cost or whatever, just do it. Just get one, you will be so happy you did and HEALTHIER too I promise! I lost like 3-4 pounds because of this thing- invest in your health. It keeps you conscious of your decisions on a day to day and is just overall amazing. If you have been confused about fitness and heart health, its time to get a Fitbit! It will make you healthier and happier knowing your body even more than you thought you did before. I also recommend some wireless headphones and a fannypack if you are looking into some beginner essentials to get started this year.
